Caernarfon 13 - Bethesda 10

Although the weather was awful the pitch was in excellent condition thanks to the hard work of our groundsmen. With both teams endeavouring to play rugby the wind and rain also played it’s part, and with the Cofis playing downfield for the first half and into the wind Gareth Patchett and Carwyn Roberts made the most to get the ball out wide to wingers Dylan Gwyn and Tomos Jones with the latter able to make good ground on a few occasions. A solid tackle by robust centre Dafydd Ll. Williams provided loose ball which Armando Morgan pounced on and passed on to Carwyn Roberts who then fed the initial tackler Williams who broke through the visitor’s defence and with the try line beckoning he offloaded to Tomos Jones who was tackled just short of the line. From the ensuing scrum the Cofis got turnover ball and were awarded a penalty which Aled Jones duly converted. Within  10 minutes the visitors were back on level terms when Gethin Long kicked a penalty. The score remained at 3-3 at half time.

With the wind now behind the Cofis the tactic was to pin their opponents back in their own half and secure good attacking ball from the ensuing set play and following another thumping tackle by Dafydd L. Williams it was No 8 Mac Jones that broke through the stubborn Pesda defence and passed to Carwyn Roberts who then offloaded to Shaun Owen and he dived over under the posts for the first try of the match on 48 minutes, which Aled Jones duly converted to make the score 10 - 3. Play continued to be mainly in the visitor’s half and following another penalty awarded to the home side Aled Jones converted a fine penalty to make it 13-3.

This seemed to spur the visitors and the last 10 minutes of play was nearly all played within the Cofi 22m and following some intense pressure on the Cofi line the visitors were awarded a penalty try to make it 13-10. But the Cofi defence held until the end to secure a fine home win. Next Saturday is an away trip to Denbigh.

Caernarfon’s 2nd XV continue to top the North Wales 2nd XV league with a 45 - 12 win at Rhyl. Next up is a home tie versus Bala.

The Youth team lost at home to Nant by 41 - 5 and next Saturday are away to Pwlleli
